Step 1) Realize that you were broken before you were born. That babies are born with bones not fused together and that maybe yours turned out crooked. Know that you don’t want to be fixed. That no one ever wants to be fixed. No one wants their lives to get better. If you didn’t hurt, then what would you have left? Exactly. Nothing.
Step 2) Realize that nothing you do will ever be original or new. Learn how to deal with this fact. Learn how to deal with the fact that you aren’t even you but more of bits and pieces of everybody else. Realize that you are only one tiny person in the world and if you didn’t know by now; there isn’t one person out there that genuinely cares.
Step 3) Make sure you’ve had the previous realizations before you proceed to this step. Okay, now you are going to learn how to smile. Hold your mouth up with your fingers if you have to. Do this everyday and sooner or later, you’ll be able to smile without hurting. This will be easier if you know that you are nothing special and that smiling isn’t all that hard.
Step 4) You’re almost there. Don’t give up now. You’re going to find something meaningful every single day. You are going to make every day mean something to you and this is probably the hardest step there is. Keep smiling. Look pretty. Look alive. Keep thinking and thinking and thinking. Because if you’re thinking, you’re alive.
Step 5) Congratulations. You made it to the last step. It’s all going to get easier. For this step, you have to realize that your lungs are not missing or bleeding or any other metaphor you can think of. Your body isn’t a metaphor either. Treat yourself like a body instead of like a poem. You can do it. Oh and don’t forget to breathe. It’s easy after all of the steps. Inhale. Exhale. Think. Repeat as necessary.
